Tainted Love Friday 5!!

The Beautiful South – “Something That You Said” from 0898

Easily the weirdest un-love song I have ever heard, ex-Housemartin Paul Heaton’s loving delivery and intricate string arrangements almost make you forget the horribly dark lyrics…“The perfect kiss is with the boy that you just stabbed to death”…::shudders::

Fountains Of Wayne – “Stacy’s Mom” from Welcome Interstate Managers

A modern power pop gem, there’s no getting past the story of a boy who pines for his girly friend’s mom…the point was driven even further home with the release of the song’s video, which features model Rachel Hunter…it was like Divinyls’ “I Touch Myself” all over again…

XTC – “Your Dictionary” from Apple Venus Volume One

Few people can write bitter lyrics as well as Andy Partridge…from the heretical “Dear God” to the biting “Complicated Game”, the man can sure spin a woeful tale in an enjoyable way…Andy has released some of his home recordings recently, and maybe he’ll reunite XTC for some more studio work (as his stage fright has prevented the band from touring since the mid-‘80s)…

Elvis Costello and the Attractions – “I Want You” from Blood And Chocolate

Don’t let the title fool you, this is not your everyday love song…transitioning from a seemingly sweet ballad (with mildly alarming lyrics) into a creepy-crawly stomp, it’s one of Elvis’ weirdest songs that isn’t on Imperial Bedroom…is it odd that a History teacher of mine turned me on to this song?…

Oingo Boingo – “Little Girls” from Only A Lad

Do I really have to explain this one?…
