Hooray for the Friday 5!!

Grinderman – “Grinderman” from Grinderman
Ah, the triple-threat: band, song and album with the same name!…this minimalist creep-out from Dr. Cave and most of the Bad Seeds’ weirdo blues project is a blast of noisy, shiver-inducing terror…I’m pretty sure that they just re-wrote this song into “Night Of The Lotus Eaters” from Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!, but “Grinderman” is a tour de force for the veteran musicians…also, way to plug in your guitar just in time for the solo, Nick

Silver Jews – “Sometimes A Pony Gets Depressed” from Tanglewood Numbers
Originally a collaboration between David Berman and Stephen Malkmus, indie favorites Silver Jews eventually became the solo venture of the very literate Berman…recently, though, Berman announced the end of Silver Jews, as he will be concentrating on stopping his lobbyist father from ruining any more American lives…how’s that for indie rock with a cause?…

Laika & The Cosmonauts – “Psyko” from Instruments Of Terror
Finland’s finest called it a career last year, after 20 long years of making insanely intricate surf music…this song, a combination of the themes from “Psycho” and “Vertigo,” show off their virtuosity…they’ll certainly be missed, but luckily they left a huge back catalogue for budding surfers to study…

Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3 – “Your Head Here” from Goodnight Oslo
My hero is back with his occasional band for another set of skewed pop music…made up of most of The Minus 5, The Venus 3 provides a delightfully jangly backdrop to Robyn‘s classic surreal songwriting…though not as immediate as their previous collaboration, 2006’s Olé! Tarantula, the new album does feature plenty of standouts, of which this is one…

The Moon-Rays – “The Headless Horseman” from Swingin’ At The Séance
Just like The Ventures weren’t really a surf band, neither are The Moon-Rays…this is quite vividly heard on their newest album, a big band, mostly covers affair…one particular highlight is this take on the tune from Disney’s “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow”…this’ll make quite an addition to any Hallowe’en mix…
