Aural Fixation: Major Lazer’s “Hold The Line (feat. Mr. Lexx & Santigold)”

I’m not sure when it happened, but hip-hop got awesome all of a sudden. Give credit to M.I.A., N.A.S.A. and Girl Talk (okay, he doesn’t really ‘perform,’ per se, but you get it) for slashing and burning through the unlistenable mess that is the modern hip-hop scene. Santi/Santogold could be in there as well, but her solo album just wasn’t that interesting. However, a few of the records she’s appeared on have given her the cred that her own work only hinted at. Case in point: Major Lazer, the new project from Philadelphia’s homeslice Diplo and British DJ Switch. Aside from the GI Joe-like animation, the record features some of the most challenging, sonically maddening tracks to hit the scene in a couple of years. The lead track, “I’ll Make Ya” (formerly called “Hold The Line”), features Santi along with the appropriately thick-accented Mr. Lexx, one of many Jamaican artists on the disc. It’s as scatterbrained as you might expect (the sound effects really remind me of Sigue Sigue Sputnik), and, according to SPIN, some of the other guest vocalists have “recorded tracks elsewhere that advocate extreme anti-gay violence.” Even though that’s very not cool, this track totally is.

Kick it!
