The Forgotten Arm: Happy Mondays

Yeah, I know, the Happy Mondays aren’t all that forgotten. However, they don’t get nearly the amount of respect they deserve. Sure, the last album of their original run (the Factory Records-bankrupting …Yes Please!) was misguided at best. Yeah, their recent reunion has yet to produce any songs worthy of their canon. True, Shaun Ryder‘s giant head is terrifying. Aside from all that, though, there’s a lot to love.

Their John Cale-produced debut album, with its unwieldy title, is entertaining enough, but it’s 1990’s Pills ‘n’ Thrills And Bellyaches that finds the boys at their best. With a few hit singles, including the infectious “Kinky Afro,” Pills was the first and last truly great thing the Mondays ever did. So far, that is.

Supposedly, the remaining members of the band are in the studio, recording a follow-up to 2007’s meh Uncle Dysfunktional. Additionally, the Mondays will be opening for The Psychedelic Furs during their Fall tour. That may give me reason to see the Furs again in such a short span of time.

For more info on the Happy Mondays, Joy Division, The Durutti Column and other Factory bands, I highly recommend ’24 Hour Party People,’ a great documentary that takes its name from the Mondays’ signature song.
